  • One of the densest locations for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in the nation with 26 located in Michigan and majority in the region. Along with 96 of the top 100 automotive suppliers are in the state, including 60 having their North American Headquarters here.   

 

Advanced Manufacturing

  • Detroit ranks the #2 metro for manufacturing talent density having two-times more talent than U.S. average and is home to more than 290,000 advanced manufacturing jobs that’s employed more than 8,000 businesses operating in the industry sector. 
  • Detroit ranks as the #1 U.S. Metro for total assemblers and fabricators and has one of the lowest turnover rates.   
  • Detroit ranks the #1 U.S. metro for tool and die makers, having a talent density nearly seven times more than the U.S. average. 
  • Michigan is working to lead clean energy, ranking #1 for clean energy job growth with majority being in mobility technology along with ranking #3 for clean energy investments at $9.1 billion invested. 

 

Corporate and Professional Services  

  • It’s no accident that 17 Fortune 1000 companies — 9 in the Fortune 500 — have their headquarters in the Detroit Region. These companies have more than 795,000 employees worldwide and a combined revenue of more than $465 billion (2023). They are supported by a business community with nearly 10,000 corporate and professional services companies.   
  • There are more than 740,000 business, finance, and administrative workers (2023) in the Detroit Region. That workforce is projected to grow on par with national projections in the next five years. 

 

Research, Engineering, and Design

  • Detroit ranks the #2 metro for engineers and technicians in the U.S. with more than 90,000 engineers in the Detroit Region. 
  • Detroit is the top spot for design talent, ranking #1 for commercial and industrial designer density at nearly three-times more than the U.S. average which is more than New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. 
  • Design powers Detroit, making up 20% of Detroit’s economy and most of the design firms (70%) are small businesses.  
  • The first and only U.S. city to receive the UNSECO city of design is Detroit and hosts an annual month of design that attracts more than 100,000 attendees with hundreds of showcases and events. 
  • Some of the nation’s top design programs are located in the region at the College of Creative Studies (CCS) and Cranbrook Academy of Arts along with a top architecture program at the University of Detroit Mercy. 

 

Logistics

  • Detroit has the #1 airport (DTW) for traveler satisfaction, with had more than 23 million passengers in 2023 along with 140 non-stop domestic and 26 international destinations. 
  • The busiest northern border crossing in North America is in Detroit, there are five international border crossings including the new $5 billion Gordie Howe Bridge. 
  • The Detroit Region is supported by robust local infrastructure with more than 2,000 miles of interstate and highways, 7 cargo ports (including the #3 largest steel handling port in the nation), and 4 of the 7 class-one railways with 25 intermodal facilities (20% of Michigan’s tonnage is shipped by railway).

  • Detroit is the #1 U.S. location for the fastest growing startups with more than 690 deals valued at $4 billion in 2023. 
  • The region is supported by nearly 200 technology related support assets including accelerators, incubators, co-working spaces, venture capital networking, and robust partners. 
  • There are more than 97,000 technology talent in the Detroit Region, that ranks #3 for tech talent cost vs quality out of the top tech markets in 2023. 
  • The region is home to four unicorn companies (startups, privately held companies worth more than $1 billion) along with nearly 3,000 technology related companies. 

 

Financial Services 

  • There are more than 97,000 financial related workers in the Detroit Region, which has grown faster and is nearly 30% more affordable than national rates. 
  • There is a historic and growing financial services hub in the region. 
  • There are 17 companies in the Fortune 1000, 9 of which are in the Fortune 500, that have a combined value of more than $465 billion in 2023. 
  • Top ranking mortgage lenders (United Wholesale Mortage and Rocket Mortage) along with a presence of the big four accounting firms (Deloitte, Ernest & Young (EY), KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)).
