From concept to consumer, the complete talent vertical is in the 11-County Detroit Region, with innovative design thinking, top engineers and revolutionary research technologies. This has made research, engineering & design (RED) a thriving industry cluster. The cluster has three sub clusters including: Design, Engineering & Research/Scientific.
There’s nearly 100,000 people employed in the RED industry in the region, with jobs growing 8.1% from 2015-2019. Metro Detroit is #1 for engineering talent density and employs more industrial and commercial designers than any other metro in the United States.
The industry is supported by the third largest R&D university hub in the U.S. with more than $2.3 billion spending annually, clearly demonstrating the region’s strong and growing creative talent to support a hub of innovation.
”Locating in the Detroit Region allows the company to draw from one of the greatest density of engineering talent in the U.S. Quality talent, low-cost of living, and many others were among decisive reasons Ann Arbor was selected for the new R&B hub.”
KLA-Tencor Invested $150 million into a new R&D hub and second headquarters based in Ann Arbor. This new research center will create over 600 new jobs with positions for talented engineers, physicists, data scientists and support staff. KLA chose the Detroit Region over 390 other sites.
To showcase the many aspects of the growing RED industry and connect companies and partners with regional information, the DRP has created an interactive and engaging story map along with a business case PDF.
