The level of innovation needed to put – and keep – the world on wheels takes talent and know-how. It also requires a broad network of manufacturers and suppliers that support a complex supply chain.
Given the automotive and mobility industries footprint in Michigan, it’s no accident that the Detroit Region remains one of the most innovative places on the planet.
These seven facts show why Detroit continues to lead the way in mobility.
90,000 engineers are leading the industry forward here.
Engineers are synonymous with innovation. The Detroit Region is one of the largest and densest hubs for engineering talent with more than 90,000 engineers and technicians. In fact, Detroit ranks #2 for engineering talent per capita in the U.S. with 130% more talent than the average metro.
96 of the 100 top automotive suppliers call Michigan home.
We pack in more automotive leaders than anywhere else in North America. Twenty-six original equipment manufacturers (OEM) are located in Michigan. We also have 96 of the top 100 automotive suppliers, 60 of whom have their North American Headquarters in Michigan.
A cluster of tech centers is producing some of the world’s latest mobility technologies.
You need tech, we have tech. There are more than 2,200 mobility and automotive suppliers or related technology center or facilities locations in Michigan. That’s where much of the innovation happens.
Our automotive R & D spending outpaces the rest of the country … combined. Yes, we’re talking the entire U.S.
We put our money where our mouth is. There is $13.8 billion in automotive R & D spending in Michigan annually. That’s over 60% of the national total.
We are the #1 state for EV and battery investments over the past five years.
Investment attracts more investment. Michigan is the #1 state for EV and battery related investments, with more than $28 billion investments announced from 2018-2023. Most of this investment is in the Detroit Region.
By 2030, Michigan will have the batteries to support 10 million EVs.
Electrification requires high powered batteries, and lots of them. Michigan is a leader for battery capacity as the state is projected to have enough EV battery capacity to support more than 10 million EVs per year by 2030.
We are home to the first public in-road EV charging system and an emerging innovation district with roots dating back to the industry’s origins. We are just getting started.
The first public in-road EV charging wireless system is located at Michigan Central in Detroit. Created by Ford Motor Co, the new 30-acre culture and tech hub is rapidly attracting talented entrepreneurs and companies who are developing innovations that will change the world.
